Latium is a coastal region of western central Italy in just south of the Tiber river. It is bordered by Etruria and Umbria to the north, Samnium to the east and Campania to the south.
Latium in the original sense referred to only a small area of land inhabited by the Latins, but the term extended to also encompass the territories of the Aequi, Hernici and Volsci as they were conquered and assimilated by Rome.
The city of Rome itself is located in northern Latium. It took the Romans over 400 years to unify the region, from the city's foundation in 753 BC to the end of the final Latin War in 338 BC. This marked one of the first steps in Rome's emergence as a major power in the region.
